Lab Description:
The Machine Shop Prototyping Lab serves as the main support for the MAE department. Students come through the shop throughout their time at UCCS, creating a hands-on learning experience with well-rounded engineers who can not only design, but turn projects into reality. The machine shop is a well-equipped, safe environment where students learn about the machines and tools required to manufacture. The machine shop also provides support to various student clubs, classroom laboratories, and faculty research projects.

•    5 3-Axis Vertical Mills with tooling and digital readouts
•    5 Machining Lathes with tooling and digital readouts
•    MIG, TIG, Oxy/Acetylene welding and hot work
•    2 large-format rapid prototyping 3D printers

Advanced Prototyping Lab

Lab Description:
The Advanced Prototyping Lab is a cutting-edge machine and manufacturing lab that primarily supports university research efforts and student development in advanced manufacturing. This lab also supports many on-campus clubs, laboratories, and complex senior design projects. Students are able to work hands-on with shop staff to design and manufacture high-quality parts. This lab also serves as a resource for students to gain real-world manufacturing experience by offering its services to the community. This allows students to fulfill deliverables and jobs for external clients.

Space Systems Lab

Lab Description:
The UCCS Space Systems Laboratory offers a dynamic environment where students engage in hands-on learning and cutting-edge research. The lab actively participates in a variety of spaceflight opportunities, including Colorado Space Grant’s DemoSat Program, high-altitude balloon missions, NASA’s RockSat sounding rocket flights, and experiments aboard the International Space Station. Research spans a wide range of topics and collaborations. These include Space Domain Awareness projects with the U.S. Space Force's SDA TAP Lab, CubeSat development and cybersecurity, and advanced trajectory analysis for interplanetary missions, including concepts related to human spaceflight and space elevator technologies. In addition to education and research, we are committed to inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers through outreach activities and STEM workshops for K–12 students and teachers.

Equipment and Facilities: 

  • Sentek Dynamics L0111A low-force air-cooled electrodynamic shaker and Crystal Instruments Controller.  Provides vibration testing capability for small satellites up to 200 kg (440 lb).  Available testing consists of sine and random vibration from 3 - 4500 Hz and shock testing up to 25 gs.
  • Six 1U cubesats for classroom instruction.
  • 16 computers with software programs including Systems Toolkit (STK, orbital modeling program), Solidworks, Matlab, and FoxTelem Ground station program and associated software to communicate with cubesats.
  • Real cubesats and experiments that have flown both to near space and into space.
