There are many degree choices in the College of Engineering and Applied Science. Add to your knowledge and immediate or future career needs with a graduate certificate designed to give you career-ready skills without a full degree. Or consider a Master of Engineering degree for an applied, non-thesis course of study. Master of Science degrees offer thesis-based or research-based degrees. Continue your academic education and research with a PhD.

Master of Science

Master of Science degrees emphasize original research-based work and require a thesis for completion, making it the ideal degree for graduates who wish to pursue a PhD after completing their master’s program.

Computer Science

Graduate computer science students are encouraged to participate in the professional activities of the department. This includes attending seminars and colloquiums, suggesting improvements in curriculum (both undergraduate and graduate), suggesting new teaching techniques and participating in the enhancement of computer hardware and software facilities within the department.

Computer Science - Games and Media Integration

The Masters of Science degree in Computer Science - Games and Media Integration option is an interdisciplinary degree that gives students a firm foundation in pursuing research and development in the area of games, animation and movie making, VR/HCI, complex systems, and wearable computing.

Electrical Engineering

The degree courses for the Master of Science in Engineering is designed to enable students from local industry to continue their studies. Most on-campus courses are scheduled before and after the workday to facilitate participation. The completion of the MSEE degree is normally accomplished in one to three years.

Mechanical Engineering

The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering is a research-oriented academic degree appropriate either as a terminal degree or in preparation for doctoral studies in mechanical and aerospace engineering.

Master of Engineering

Master of Engineering degrees are technical master’s degrees for students who have an undergraduate degree in engineering and would like a master’s degree in a specific fieldwork area. Students without an undergraduate degree in engineering may need to take additional coursework.

Engineering Management (online)

The UCCS MEEM program will prepare engineers for effective technical management through a series of courses focused on the key skills needed to be successful in a technology-driven work environment.

Cybersecurity

Network and system security has become very critical and increasingly urgent in today's network and information systems. Cybersecurity deals with operations that protect and defend information and information systems by ensuring their availability, integrity, authentication, confidentiality, and nonrepudiation.

Software Engineering

To accommodate the demand for well educated software engineers in almost all industries today, UCCS has established the Master of Engineering degree with a Focus in Software Engineering. UCCS offers a unique environment to study, learn, and share experiences surrounding this special engineering discipline. Our faculty comes from a broad spectrum of backgrounds. Many have had years of experience in industry prior to joining the faculty. The result is a diverse melting pot of ideas, technologies, and experiences.

Space Operations (online)

The Master of Engineering with a specialty in Space Operations (MESO) is well suited for working professionals involved in civil, military, or commercial space operations, space systems requirements, design specifications, payload and mission support, and space systems analysis.

Systems Engineering (online)

Systems engineering describes the highly interdisciplinary domain of scientific, technical, and managerial skills needed to evolve, verify, field and support an integrated and balanced set of system solutions designed to satisfy customer needs. The UCCS Master of Engineering Systems Engineering (MESyE) program provides a broad understanding of the roles of a systems engineer and a thorough understanding of process implementation -- from needs analysis and system requirements to trade off studies and system design.

Online Degrees

PhD in Engineering

The PhD is a terminal degree that qualifies the degree holder to teach in their chosen subject field at the university level, work in research areas in their specialized field, or continue to actively pursue research for publication. Candidates pursue extensive and original research and present results in a thesis or dissertation. Students will have a tenured professor serve as advisor based on the research interest area.

Computer Science

The Doctor of Philosophy is a degree that is conferred on a student who has demonstrated proficiency in some broad area of learning, and who has proven that he or she has the capability to evaluate work in the field critically. In addition, the student must have demonstrated the ability to work independently and make original contributions to the field.

Electrical Engineering

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering supports a PhD program with a Concentration in Electrical Engineering as part of the PhD in Engineering degree.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The Doctor of Philosophy is a degree that is conferred on a student who has demonstrated proficiency in some broad area of learning, and who has proven that he or she has the capability to evaluate work in the field critically. In addition, the student must have demonstrated the ability to work independently and make original contributions to the field. The degree is conferred after the student has satisfied both a course work and dissertation requirement under the supervision of a committee. Security

The College of Engineering and Applied Science at UCCS offers a Security specialty in the Ph.D. in Engineering degree program. The nation-wide unique specialty offers the security curriculum for students to study and conduct multi-disciplinary research in areas of cyber security, physical security, and homeland security, which have become critical and increasingly urgent in today's personal, business, and government operations. This new multi-disciplinary concentration integrates the existing curriculum and research initiatives, and meets the grand challenges of security with the quality expected from the University of Colorado.

Electric Drivetrain Technology

Two campuses of the University of Colorado system have united to establish the Department-of-Energy sponsored “GATE Center of Excellence in Innovative Drivetrains in Electric Automotive Technology Education” (IDEATE). The University of Colorado Boulder (CU-Boulder) is widely regarded as having one of the top graduate programs in power electronics in the country; the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) has unrivaled expertise in algorithms for automotive battery control.

Engineering Management

The College of Engineering and Applied Science offers an online Graduate Certificate in Engineering Management to qualified students. The certificate program is a practical and convenient way for engineers and technical professionals to build on their technical education foundation.

Network System Security

Individuals who engineer computer based systems or develop policy and doctrine for these systems where information assurance is an objective require knowledge of the methods, techniques, and tools used in information operations. Information operations include those actions taken to gain, defend, or attack information or information systems. The threats and vulnerabilities are applicable in the commercial as well as the military world.
This certificate provides a solid foundation in communication system concepts, a broad introduction to the entire spectrum of information operations, and advanced study of information assurance topics. The final two courses cover in-depth the protection of information through cryptographic methods and the design and management of systems from a security viewpoint.

Engineering Secure Software

Students completing the four courses will receive a Graduate Certificate in Secure Software Systems from UCCS. In addition, the courses can constitute 40% of the following programs: Master of Science in Computer Science, Master of Engineering with focus in Information Assurance (MEIA) or Software Systems Engineering (MESSE). In addition, it can be used in the Ph.D. in Engineering degree program.
Our MEIA degree program and curriculum are certified by the National Security Agency's (NSA) Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) and meet the Information Assurance Professional (4011) Training Standards. Successful graduates of the MEIA degree program will receive the CNSS Information Assurance Professional (4011) certificate without additional testing requirements.

Software Engineering

Emphasizing both technical and managerial aspects of building large, complex software-intensive systems, the program has two purposes: it provides employees of local companies with an opportunity to enhance their software engineering skills and their chances for career advancement, and it provides students currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) with more in-depth knowledge in software engineering to enhance employability and career advancement.

Space Operations

The College of Engineering and Applied Science offers an online Graduate level Certificate in Space Operations to qualified students. Involving only a fraction of the coursework required for a master's degree, the certificate can be completed in less than two years.

Systems Engineering

The College of Engineering and Applied Science offers an online Graduate level Certificate in Systems Engineering to qualified students. The program has been designed to provide employees of engineering companies with an opportunity to enhance their systems engineering knowledge and skills.
